New York City was originally inhabited by the Lenape native indians at the time of its European discovery in 1524.During the American Revolution the largest battle of the war, the Battle of Long Island was fought in August 1776, entirely within the modern day borough of Brooklyn.In 1898, the modern City of New York was formed with the consolidation of Brooklyn (until then a separate city), the County of New York (which then included parts of the Bronx), the County of Richmond, and the western portion of the County of Queens. Today, New York is the most populous city in the United States. In 2010, the U.s. census bureau estimated New York's population on July 1, 2009, to be 8,391,881 (up from 8.0 million in 2000 and 7.3 million in 1990).wikipedia
